Is Nintendo about to challenge Jenny Craig?

Guest post: Chris Matyszczyk investigates the power of Nintendo's Wii and virtual gaming to improve the health and well being of society.

Depending on whose statistics you prefer to disbelieve, between 15 and 25 percent of American children are overweight.

The causes seem evident to all commentators: too many Whoppers and Gorditas, too many days moving less often that Mitt Romney's face and too many hours watching "Desperate Housewives" and killing people through the thrilling medium of "Grand Theft Auto" and its ilk.

The sad fact is, though, that educators have found it rather hard to persuade children to leave these wonders behind and embrace gyms, football fields, nature walks and steroid-free baseball. (Chasing celebrities with a camera has still not been approved by any Board of Education.)

However, five schools in Worcestershire, (pronounced Wuss-tersha) England have created a new form of class.

South Africa Allows Killing of Elephants

South Africa said Monday that it will start killing elephants to reduce their burgeoning numbers, ending a 13-year ban and possibly setting a precedent for other African nations.

Environment Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said the government was left with no choice but to reintroduce killing elephants "as a last option and under very strict conditions" to reduce environmental degradation and rising conflicts with humans.

There will be no "wholesale slaughter," he told reporters.

The announcement follows months of impassioned debate, with some conservationists arguing for elephant killings to protect the ecosystem, and animal welfare groups outraged at the prospect of slaughtering one of the planet's most intelligent and self-aware creatures.

South Africa has been hugely successful in protecting its elephant population, once on the verge of extinction in parts of the country.

First Half Fantasy Recap & Second Half Preview

Paul's lethal combination of points, assists, and steals, in addition to terrific FG and FT%'s, make him the league's most valuable fantasy performer.

Honorable Mention - LeBron James: I'll pull a stat from the recent HOOPSWORLD Magazine (be on the lookout for it this week): Only two players in NBA history have averaged at least 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists for an entire season – Oscar Robertson (multiple times) and some guy named Michael Jordan ('88-'89). Not bad company to keep.

(Garrett) - Chris Paul: The race between CP3 and King James is pretty tight, but Paul gets the edge because he is a point guard which is a much more difficult fantasy position to fill.

Honorable Mention - LeBron James: There isn't anything James doesn't do well, but Paul is dominant in more categories.

Vigil honors slain restaurant owner

He fought to stay composed at Friday's candlelight vigil for his best friend, Degene Barecha, who was gunned down Wednesday in his Central District store, Philadelphia Cheese Steak. Kefenine wrapped his arms around the women, whose agony could be heard a block away.

Then he crouched below a bullet hole in a store window, knelt on the curb and saw the blood that still stained the beige floor.

He put his head in his hands and broke down.

Nader Runs, Obama Responds Wisely

Ralph Nader is running again for president.

After four previous bids, mounted in varying forums and with varying goals, Nader is used to the slings and arrows that will be tossed his way. He is conscious and committed. He will not back off.

He knows how to campaign in the face of a firestorm of criticism.

Above all, he knows how to make himself heard — even when almost everyone who guides the political processes of the nation wants to shut him up.

The latter knowledge will serve him well in a 2008 contest where the man who is either a national treasure or a national frustration, or perhaps both, may find himself more marginalized than ever before.

Nader is running for the same reason he has run in the past: Because the likely nominees of the two major parties do not begin to meet the standards that might reasonably be asked of progressive contenders in 21st-century America.
