Introducing The iTaser: MP3 Player Meets Hip, Portable Shock Device
Deborah Kerr in The King and I recommended whistling a happy tune when afraid, but now fearful Americans can sing along to their favourite tracks while shooting anyone who causes them consternation with a 50,000-volt electric charge. The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which is expected to receive more than 140,000 visitors this week, is no stranger to bizarre gadgets but the iTaser - as it has been dubbed - must rank as one of the oddest. It combines a Taser stun gun, used by 12,000 law enforcement and security forces, including the Metropolitan police, with an MP3 player and earphones. As to which tracks anyone toting such a device might download on to the 1GB player that is integrated into the gun's holster, anything by Sparks or Frank Zappa must be fairly high on the list.
Pat's Beside the Point
Only three pictures hang in the office of Cavaliers coach Mike Brown at Quicken Loans Arena. Two are of his family. The other is of his players joining hands high in the air, an action and a picture that he says represents ''team.'' Brown starts an All-Star Game assessment of his team by talking about the ways he can improve as a coach. He continues by praising his players for winning despite more injuries than they would like to count. This is the same coach who works the sideline markers at his son's grade-school football games and who greets everyone by first name. This coach preaches defense, but spent part of the offseason in Europe studying ways to improve the offense. He's not afraid to let players suggest plays in key moments or to let them call a play that will take precedence over his during a game.
In eyes of L.A., to err is a fine
On a recent morning while Glenn Geraghty was away, the security alarm at his Watts home went off. When Los Angeles police officers arrived, a neighbor with a key to the house offered a sheepish apology: Geraghty's dog, Checkers, had pawed open the gate on his cage and tripped the alarm's motion sensors. The police left, only to be summoned back hours later when the dog got free a second time. That should have been the end of it. A city law grants only two false alarms every 12 months. Any more than that and police aren't required to respond unless someone at the scene verifies that the alarm is real. .
Builder's models put buyers right at home
I think when you drive up to it, it's kind of like Tara and you think you are going to walk into something traditional. I think they (the designers) wanted to show you something a little different," she said. "And there is nothing in this model that we have ever had in any other model home," she said, adding that once construction on the house was finished, "everything (for the interior) comes in 18-wheelers, all of it." A crew spends the first day doing wall coverings and window treatments and on the second day, they bring in all of the furniture and accessories. "They are in and out in three days and then they're gone, and it's all perfect," she said. When the company is ready to sell the house, Mangrum said the 18-wheelers will reappear.

If NATO collapses in the face of modest demands from Canada, then everybody will abandon South Afghanistan to the Taliban. 'Shake Hands With The Devil' all over again..... Recent work with schools in Maine has shown the huge value of using a laptop across all of one's studies, as well as for play. Bringing the laptop home engages the family. In one Cambodian village where we have been working, there is no electricity, thus the laptop is, among other things, the brightest light source in the home. Finally, regarding recycled machines: if we estimate 100 million available used desktops, and each one requires only one hour of human attention to refurbish, reload, and handle, that is forty-five thousand work years. Thus, while we definitely encourage the recycling of used computers, it is not the solution for One Laptop per Child. How is it possible to get the cost so low? * First, by dramatically lowering the cost of the display. The first-generation machine will have a novel, dual-mode display that represents improvements to the LCD displays commonly found in inexpensive DVD players.

Superheroes – Fashion and Fantasy
Willhelm's 2006 design of a royal blue dress, for example, features a red and yellow 'S' emblem, characteristic of Superman. Nicolas Ghesquière's extraordinary metallic, articulated "robot" leggings for Balenciaga are reminiscent of Iron Man's skin. Beirendonck's inflatable vinyl clothing can be compared to The Hulk, a metaphor for male potency, and Gaultier's second-skin bodysuits share the streamlined aerodynamics of The Flash. Pugh's techno-gothic, winged and masked costume in metal and Latex, meanwhile, is part of a cybernetic fashion exploration which merges metal, skin, mesh and rubber, in the manner of the X-Men or Batman and an early, web-like gown by Armani has the qualities of a Spiderwoman. Nike's "Swift Suit" and Speedo's "Fastskin Suit" will also illustrate the nature of this superhero who possesses superhuman speed.

Gates: Microsoft Offer For Yahoo Firm
Most analysts believe Microsoft will do whatever it takes to buy Yahoo. Redmond-based Microsoft has invested heavily in honing its own search engine and advertising technology, but neither it nor Yahoo have helped close the gap with Google, which dominates Microsoft and Yahoo in U.S. search queries and related advertising revenue.Yahoo is believed to want at least $40 per share, but Microsoft has held firm so far, calling its original bid "full and fair." Microsoft's next move could be to take the offer directly to Yahoo's shareholders, or to attempt a hostile takeover of Yahoo's board.Yahoo shares closed at $29.66 Friday. Markets were closed Monday for Presidents Day.Gates' comment Monday was in response to a question during a phone interview about an unrelated effort to give students free access to certain Microsoft software. There have also been reports that Yahoo is exploring a merger with Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, another popular Internet property that has been struggling in recent years.
