| Music exec: "Music 1.0 is dead."
DRM on purchased music is dead A utility pricing model or flat-rate fee for music might be the way to go Ad-supported streaming music sites like iMeem are legitimate players Indie music accounts for upwards of 30 percent of music sales Napster isn't losing $70 million per quarter (and is breaking even) The music business is a bastion of creativity and experimentation Only a few years ago, none of those statements would have been true, but perhaps none is more striking than the last. Panelists from every sector of the digital media marketplace were in agreement that the major labels, under the pressure of eroding profits, have been forced to become experimental in their business dealings and to do deals that would have been deemed too risky only months before. Just within the last year, we've seen an array of experiments that include ad-supported streaming, "album cards" from labels like Sony BMG, and allowing Amazon to offer MP3s from all four majors.
Injured worker benefits dipped
In his Feb. 19 letter, Worksforce Safety and Insurance interim director John Halvorson claimed that WSI's "benefits to injured workers are among the finest in the country and have continually been enhanced in past legislative sessions."I suppose that WSI employees work in anonymity behind bullet-proof glass to avoid getting struck by the bouquets of flowers thrown their way by injured workers. In truth, wage-loss benefits, permanent impairment benefits, medical treatment and vocational rehabilitation awards have all been reduced under WSI's employer-dominated board of directors. That's how WSI amassed nearly $2 billion in reserves without increasing employer premiums. It took every nickel out of the pockets of injured workers and their families. Many of the benefit reductions were in the form of new laws passed by the Legislature at the urging of WSI and its big business boosters.

For many in Mexico, life starts to look up
Crime is down, public health and education levels are improving, and Mexican democracy is more robust than at any time in history. "The country is stronger than ever," said Leon Krauze, a political author and television host. "We have managed to overcome many of the political and economic tempests that used to threaten us." As the debate over illegal immigration percolates in the United States, there are hopes on both sides of the border that Mexico's improving economy eventually will provide enough jobs to encourage significant numbers of Mexicans to stay and prosper in their country. There could be other benefits for the United States. Mexico bought $126 billion in U.S. goods between January and November last year, up 25 percent since 2004.
The PM-elect has an extensive list of reforms for his first 100 days ...
CLAIMING victory on Saturday night, Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd gave his fledgling government time for a strong cup of tea and maybe an iced Vo Vo but said after that it would be down to business. At his first press conference after the victory speech, there was little time for reflection on the stunning win of the previous night. Instead, Mr Rudd spelt out his extensive to-do list. He had already outlined a series of things he wanted to get done within 100 days of Labor forming government. It is not clear whether Mr Rudd will take the 100 days from now or from the time the Governor-General gives him the commission, but given his frantic activity already, it is likely that he started counting down the 100 days as soon as John Howard conceded defeat.
Sir stars in ad campaign
This isn't Stuart's first television appearance; last October he was featured on the BBC London News in a feature about Oxford and Cambridge graduates starting out their teaching careers at new schools. It was after watching this that producers contacted him for their next advert. The ten-second endorsement features Stuart drinking tea out of a Tottenham mug and a boy teasing him about Arsenal beating them at the weekend. After this banter' the class get down to some work. He said: "It was a long day for only ten seconds of film but the kids really enjoyed it and it was a great experience for them. "The advert is true to life. I am a Spurs fan and the boy involved is an Arsenal fan. I've never actually taught him but we joke about football a lot." 5:23pm Saturday 1st March 2008 Print  Email this Comment .b_box { border: 1px solid #D7D7D7; background-color: #EEEEEE; color: #000000; padding: 5px; width: 307px; } .b_box img { border: 1px solid #D7D7D7; padding: 5px; background-color: #ffffff; } .b_box a, .b_box a:visited .b_box a:active { color: #000000 !important; } .b_box a:hover { color: #FF0000 !important; } .msg_div { padding: 0px; width: 307px; clear: left; } .entry { border-left: 1px solid #D7D7D7; border-right: 1px solid #D7D7D7; padding: 5px; width: 307px; } .entry2 { border-left: 1px solid #D7D7D7; border-right: 1px solid #D7D7D7; padding: 5px; min-height: 80px; } .b_entry { border-left: 1px solid #D7D7D7; border-right: 1px solid #D7D7D7; border-bottom: 1px solid #D7D7D7; padding: 5px; width: 307px; } fieldset { margin-top: 10px; border: 1px solid #D7D7D7; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; padding: 0px; } legend { padding: 2px 6px; color: #000000; background: #EEEEEE; border: 1px solid #D7D7D7; font-weight: bold; margin-left: 10px; } .headcell { text-align: center; color: #000000; background: #EEEEEE; border-bottom: 1px solid #D7D7D7; } .headcell a:link, .headcell a:visited, .headcell a:active { color: #000000; } .headcell a:hover { color: #FF0000; } .caltab { border: 1px solid #D7D7D7; margin-top: 5px; } .year_daycell { text-decoration: underline; text-align: center; } .year_fullcell { background: #EEEEEE; border: 1px solid #D7D7D7; } blockquote { border: 2px outset #D7D7D7; } .buttonclass { background: #EEEEEE; color: #000000; } .

The Mexican government vs. you
He had mental problems, which did not prevent him from acquiring his weapon. In Kirkwood, Mo., a gunman, upset with civic leaders, stormed City Hall during a council meeting and killed two policemen and three others before lawmen fatally shot him.On Feb. 15, one did make the front page. Steven Kazmierczak, armed with three handguns and a shotgun, walked onto the stage of a packed lecture hall at Northern Illinois University and rapidly killed five students, wounded 16 and committed suicide. Wall Street Lifts on IBM Stock Buyback
The buyback news followed two dismal economic reports showing core wholesale prices shot up more than expected last month and that consumer confidence is waning. The data together reinforced worries that the United States is suffering from stagflation, a state when the economy weakens amid rising costs. "The market is kind of overcoming negative news, which is potentially a next step toward higher prices," said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer's Investment Research. "At least in the short-term, it's a nice change here." IBM, after approving the $15 billion buyback, rose $4.79, or 4.4 percent, to $114.87. The technology company, one of the 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones industrials, said the buyback will boost its earnings for 2008 past Wall Street's prior forecasts.
